Another Kilrea Attack

Statement - Monday 9th August 1999

Last Friday evening an Ulsterbus containing a flute band from the Ballymena area was struck by bottles thrown by a group of nationalists in Kilrea as it travelled home from a parade in Limavady. Luckily no one was injured and the bus only received minor damage.

Naturally the Ulster Bands Association unreservedly condemn another sectarian attack upon its membership, which was clearly designed to heighten tensions.

There cannot be anyway of justifying such a sickening attack upon a band of which 95% of its membership are under the age of 16 and had many of their mothers with them.

It would appear that the mere sight of teenage band members are enough for these bigots to turn to violence and the Ulster Bands Association appeal for this sort of attack, which we regret have become a regular occurrence in the Kilrea area, to cease immediately before someone is seriously injured.
