Youth Involment

As well as being the largest voluntary arts activity, the scale of youth involvement is immense. It is estimated that of all the members of the Marching Band fraternity who regularly participate in Marching Band activities, about fifty to seventy five per cent are under the age of 25.

Many of the benefits for the development of these young people are already outlined under the section on voluntary arts. This undeniable fact should also be recognised.

Contrary to popular opinion (again upheld through negative perceptions), most Marching Bands have an internal code of conduct that all members must adhere to.

When a young person joins a band they must dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to learning the intricacies their chosen instrument, particularly as there is now a certain standard that must be obtained.

The feeling of well-being generated by the success of mastering this instrument can be beneficial to a young persons confidence and self-esteem.

Furthermore as Marching Bands are very active, membership especially when the band has a strong respected leadership can keep young people away from certain activities that are anti-social in nature.
